Overview

Founded in 1963, Shyam Shah Medical College (SSMC) in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, stands among the oldest state-run medical institutions in India. Established with an inaugural batch of 60 MBBS students, it gradually expanded under the leadership of the state government. Its current intake is 100 undergraduate MBBS seats (expanded by 25 seats in 2019 to reach 125) and 50 postgraduate seats across MD, MS, and diploma programmes.

Named after Shyam Shah Singh, a 19th‑century freedom fighter from the Vindhya region, the college reflects his legacy through its commitment to public health education. The original classes took place at Model Science College, Rewa, until the dedicated college building was inaugurated by then Chief Minister Arjun Singh on 3 October 1980.
